Insights into Houdini, FX, and motion design workflows.

I’ve been exploring new ways to create procedural build-up animations in Houdini, and this time I dove deep into KineFX. The result is a reusable setup that transforms any 3D object into an abstract voxel-style build-up animation – ideal for motion design and stylized reveals.

The system starts by converting geometry into a grid of points. These are connected with primitives, which are then converted into a working procedural rig using KineFX. The animation is driven by a MOPs Spread Falloff, and controlled with VEX-based formulars like prerotate, prescale, and pretranslate – giving full control over timing and behavior.

The outcome is a flexible rigging system that can be adapted across different projects and styles. I’ve published a full breakdown as a free tutorial, along with the Houdini project file.
